OCCASIONALLY, IT IS possible to spot humans and horses walking around with thick coloured tape stuck to their skin. This isn’t the latest fashion trend, but is kinesiology tape (also known as k-tape), a therapeutic aid that assists with pain relief, reducing inflammation and it provides support for muscle activity and joint mobility.
Developed by Japan born chiropractor Dr Kenzo Kase in the 1970s, who worked with product engineers to perfect tape quality, kinesiology tape isaholistic treatment which got its name from the Greek word for movement — ‘kenesis’ — as it aids muscle movement. Dr Kase wanted a tape that didn’t restrict moverment the way most athletics tapes did at the time, but instead was designed to be elastic, just like skin, and allow a full range of motion.
