Twice is a charm

Having successful fertility treatment seems to increase your chances of conceiving a second child naturally. One in five women become pregnant without intervention after having a baby through IVF – although scientists can’t explain why.

Experts at University College London suspect that ovarian stimulation from IVF cycles may improve the general function of the ovaries. Hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy may also help, or women may simply be less stressed after having given birth once already.

The study of 2,000 women means couples could be advised not to needlessly spend money on additional treatment without first attempting to conceive on their own.
