THE following can be found in some seed mixtures and can also be bought separately:

Paddy rice

This is the unprocessed kernel of rice, sometimes with the husk removed, so it could be any variety of rice. It can be included in mixtures for all sizes of parrots and is greatly relished by Java sparrows (Padda oryzivora).

Perilla

The sun-dried seed of perilla ( ) is small and fragile, measuring about one millimetre in length, and is included in some good-quality mixtures for parakeets and conures. Its value above other seeds lies in the fact that it contains Omega-3 fatty acids without the high levels of Omega-6. The fat content is about 50 per cent, so perilla should be fed sparingly except to
