Planes launched from Japanese warships attacked the US naval base in Honolulu on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, on 7 December 1941; 1,177 men died on the battleship, of whom 1,072 were never recovered. The remains of 85 men who were never identified were buried in a commingled grave at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu.
