#1 TILE IT!
WHO Kearnon and Kate O’Moloney
WHERE Bantry Bay, Cape Town
Tiles remain a firm favourite in contemporary bathroom design, but the concept of having all four walls tiled is long gone. Nowadays, tiles are used on a single wall (or two at most), in the shower only or as a trendy splashback behind the basin. They are also no longer ‘flat’ and ‘lifeless’ but come in a variety of textures and patterns.
While Kearnon and Kate wanted a simple, minimalistic design in their en suite, so as not to distract from the panoramic ocean views, striking emerald-green tiles in the walk-in shower create the ultimate focal point. The imported cement tiles with ‘square wave’ geometric relief add depth and texture and are used on both the walls and shower floor for an eye-catching look. The tiles were laid to partly frame the picture window and draw the eye to the impressive views.
Brass hardware bought from John Brass Plumbing in Salt River over a period of one year adds a luxurious old-world touch. No tap or mixer is the same, underlining the concept of ‘perfection in imperfection’.
