Portals Festival has quickly garnered a reputation for bringing together eclectic experimental bills in the capital, and this year’s event is the biggest yet, taking place at EartH in Hackney – avibrant arts space that holds three distinct stages. The demented mathcore of gets the festival off to a great start, and in Steve Roberts they have a frontman who both looks and sounds like an enraged lion. The hypnotic riffs of sound gargantuan, augmented with spacey synths that compel the crowd to sway together as one all-encompassingare the first instrumental band of many this weekend, and while their muscular riffs mixed with classic rock guitar solos are fun, they leave little impact.
