TO QUOTE Bob Dylan: “Take care of allyour memories, said my friend Mick, for you cannot relive them.” Colin Hanson would definitely disagree with Bob since many of his recollections as a child are to do with a special Mk2 that his great Uncle Stan had owned in the Sixties. Thirty years after it was sold, Colin finally tracked down and then bought the car to continue those early memories.
“Stan was my favourite Uncle and as a five-year-old I accompanied him on numerous journeys in the Jaguar. He drove in what would be now described as ‘a spirited way’ which was always a fantastic treat.”
Stan owned three bakeries in Skegness and that ‘spirited driving’ probably stemmed from racing motorbikes in his younger days, later sponsoring local riders in his native Lincolnshire.
He bought several machines from the former Formula 1 and motorbike champion, John Surtees, including a number of Manx Nortons and an MV Agusta, as well as having them prepared by Surtees. “I knew Stan Hanson well and he often supplied us with a bag of his baker’s products,” wrote Surtees in a 1993 letter to Colin. “He was a great enthusiast and what is even more important a very genuine and sincere person who I have fond memories of.”
