Thrifty gardening

I ENJOYED reading Val Bourne’s memories in ‘Each to his own’ (AG, 22 April) as I also inherited and have an inbuilt ‘Yorkshire thrift’.

When I was growing up, not many people could afford pesticides or herbicides, so used washing up water sprays to remove pests and saved egg shells to the best advantage.
