Jack the shark

I thought this photo (above) might be interesting as I saw the article in OBA about Jim Redman racing in Oz, which was great, and the mention of Jack Ahearn at Longford on his “shark tooth” Norton. This made me remember a photo I took of Jack at a very hot Calder around 1963 when I would have been 10.

The photo is not so sharp, unfortunately, taken with an old Kodak Box Brownie, but the idea is there, plus interesting to see the FE and FJ Holdens with bikes in the back of one and a Zephyr. Jack had just won a major event, but I am not surewas – maybe it was the 500 or Unlimited Victorian TT. But I do remember the race, and Jack was on fire! It was around 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the old language, and Calder being Calder, was stifling. Jack was as hot as hell, but he was very obliging for me to take this photo just after he returned to the pits, and we chatted for a while. Good bloke.
