The quilts and quilt-makers of Gee’s Bend came to public attention with the landmark exhibition ‘The Quilts of Gee’s Bend’, a display of over 60 quilts celebrating the artistic legacy of four generations of African American women from the remote hamlet of Gee’s Bend in Alabama. The show launched at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas in September 2002 and toured several other prestigious venues across the United States for the following few years. It was an absolute sensation and raised awareness of these spectacular quilts not only in America but beyond too. Michael Kimmelman, then art critic for The New York Times, declared the quilts to be “some of the most miraculous works of art America has produced”.
