6 of the best January transfers

1 Memphis DEPAY

BARCELONA TO ATLETICO MADRID

Spanish giants Barcelona continue to serve reminders of their financial mismanagement of recent years, and selling Netherlands forward Memphis Depay for only €4 million is simply the latest example. The Dutchman scored12 goals in 2021-22 after arriving as a free transfer from Lyon, yet has been completely discarded this season by the Camp Nou outfit.

His form in a Netherlands shirt – 22 goals in his last 25 matches to move within seven of Robin van Persie’s all-time Dutch goalscoring record – shows that he is still more than capable of performing at the highest level and, at the age of 29, he still has plenty more to offer. In seeking out Depay as Joao Felix’s cut-price replacement, Atletico may have landed an absolute bargain.
