DAFFODIL

As one of the first spring flowers to bloom, daffodils are symbols of rebirth and hope. Their cheerful bright yellow colour spreads positivity and joy, though they come in a range of colours, including orange and white. I have decided to depict the wild yellow daffodils that grow in abundance on the hedgerow verges around my home; however, it is a surprisingly difficult shape to recreate! For this reason all my flowers are seen in profile, which shows off that instantly recognisable central trumpet surrounded by petals. The daffodil is considered the national flower of Wales, as its flowering coincides with St David’s Day in March, and the flowers’ faithful blooming year after year is equated to David’s faithfulness to his people. Daffodil bulbs are poisonous and cause a stomach upset if eaten. They are easily mistaken for onions, so keep bulbs stored in labelled bags to avoid confusion, and don’t plant them in your vegetable plots!
