CAHOON
Charles W Cahoon of Portland, Maine, USA patented a road-going steam tug in 1869 that received periodic refills of steam from a static generator. Two years later he incorporated the boiler at one end and a ‘perpendicular motor’ at the other. Unusually it featured drive to two axles beneath the boiler, thus creating a 6x4 chassis. A patent was granted but this may have marked the end of Cahoon’s steam activities.
CAIL
Société Cail built its first railway locomotive at Denain in the north of France in 1846. Car maker Emile Delahaye would work in its drawing office in his early career and at their Belgian affiliate Halot. However, it was a different Begot car that attracted Cail in 1900 (see Borderel-Cail).
CALIFORNIA, CALIMOBILE
The California Automobile Co of San Francisco had high hopes at its 1900 launch of competitively-priced electric, petrol and steam automobiles. Publicity showed a runabout that appeared to be a French Henriod. A few petrol vehicles were sold
