By age 5, Canadian country singer George Canyon had his career path all planned out, and it did not involve a microphone. He wanted to become a pilot then transition to being an astronaut, so he could head to outer space. At age 12, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, a program focused on general aviation for kids 12 to 18.
But two years later, Canyon’s dream got derailed. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and his Air Cadets captain delivered the crushing news: He couldn’t join the Canadian Air Force, as he’d hoped, and he couldn’t become a pilot. No
