Montenegro is a very long way from Monmouth. About 2615km as the crow flies; even longer if you take the scenic route, as we have over the past several months. Yet it’s here, in the north of a country famed for its exquisite landscapes, that we have felt most at home on our journey, which is why we have come back for a second time on The Big European Odyssey.
When we initially left Montenegro, which is home to Europe’s oldest tree and deepest canyon, we did so with heavy hearts, each of us feeling there was so much more that we wanted to see and do.
Unlike when my Gran would say to me and my brother, “It’s good to leave the dinner table still feeling a little hungry!”, we really didn’t feel it was good to leave a country wanting to see so much more. And so, as we sat watching the sunset on the outskirts of Dubrovnik in late October, pondering our next move, it was quickly and unanimously decided that we should return to Montenegro before finally starting our journey north towards Italy.
