He is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, Harvard College, and the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He and his wife, Betty Wood, practiced medicine in Brookline and Brighton, Massachusetts, and currently live in Chestnut Hill, just outside of Boston. They have two children and four grandchildren.
