WINNING LETTER

THE LEGACY OF OUR GREAT LEADERS

I was saddened as I read an old article in the Young YOU section about Nelson Mandela’s time in prison (YOU, 26 August 2021). I never realised before the pain he and many others went through on Robben Island for our country’s freedom. It really hit me so hard today. They slept on the floor, mining limestone that damaged their eyes, eating food that was barely edible.

The dire conditions they had to live in are especially heart-breaking given the current state of our country.

I pray the government would take seriously the legacy of these heroes and wake up. I wish our so called millennials, who were born free and feel entitled to everything, would change in light of this.

Our country had a great start due to the sacrifices of our heroes and we should all take great responsibility to ensure an even better legacy.
