INDUSTRIEEL MUSEUM ZEELAND/ZEELAND INDUSTRIAL MUSEUM

Located in an old sugar warehouse on the Gent to Terneuzen ship canal at Sas van Gent, about a mile over the border from Belgium, is the ‘Industrieel Museum Zeeland’ which first opened its doors in 2015, writes Kevin Hoggett.

The museum tells the story of industry in Zeeland, that small part of the Netherlands which is separated from the rest by the River Scheldt to the north and Belgium to the south. It has a number of interesting exhibits, all immaculately restored.

The centrepiece is a large horizontal compound Corliss-valve steam engine and generator by the well-known Gent firm of Van den Kerchove. This has been relocated from the coke works at
