GERMAN-BUILT MAFFEI ROLLERS

Having seen the photos of the Maffei & Jacob steam roller on the Greek island of Kýthira which featured recently in OG 402, the magazine’s long-standing German friend, Busso Hennecke, has very kindly provided some images of other rollers produced in previous times by the Maffei firm and its constituents for our information and enjoyment. He’s advised that Joseph Anton von Maffei’s locomotive manufacturing company was established in München (Munich) in 1841. Another similar firm was formed by Georg Krauss, also in Munich, in 1867. Maffei made a steam roller in 1870, the design of which was described as to the ‘French system.’ Krauss constructed portable engines in 1879 and a steam roller in 1880.

Both companies built many different types and sizes of railway locomotives in various gauges and styles, obviously in competition with each
