Front door eyesore

Marina Visser of Cape Town writes How can I disguise the decorative pillars and arch at my front door? The bases are about 1.5m apart and, to be honest, I don't feel up to demolishing them. I've considered a wooden trellis or aluminium framework to cover the pillars and top of the arch, or even wooden cladding for the entire wall. However, I am concerned that this will simply accentuate the eyesore.
