Q My home has double-glazed uPVC windows, but they get black mould and mildew around the sealant. Do you know what is causing this, and are there any products that I could use to tackle it? Laura Harding, Cardiff

Black mould or mildew around windows and doors can be caused by leaks. If this is the case, it is likely that the sealant and/or the frame is damaged and needs replacing.

However, in modern homes, even in those  with new replacement windows and doors, the cause is more likely to be condensation. Over the years our houses have become more airtight.
