Late Bottled for Early Drinking

Port has a habit of tying itself in knots of definitions—perhaps nowhere more so than Late Bottled Vintage (LBV).

The official definition from the IVDP (Instituto dos Vinhos do Porto e do Douro) starts simply enough: “It is a Port from a single year selected for its high quality and bottled from between four and six years after harvest.” But then it gets a bit more complicated: “Most are ready to be consumed at the time of purchase, but some continue their aging in bottle (check the label).”
