Christmas is one of the most magical times of the year.
It may conjure images in your mind of twinkling lights, gifts piled high and plates full of food. For many of us makers, it's a time where we settle down to create with intention, hand-crafting gifts with love infused in every stitch. There is, however, another side to the festive season which is less appealing. On the flip side of the joyful sight of children tearing open their presents on Christmas morning, we have the tonnes of paper waste worldwide: an estimated 227,000 miles of wrapping paper is used each Christmas in the UK. For every holiday party hosted with friendly faces gathered together, there comes with it a culture of excessive consumption: surplus food which is thrown away, party hats that are used once and discarded and Christmas crackers containing single-use plastic gifts.
