Paint the light

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Light is a critical factor when creating atmosphere within a painting so the main aim of this article is to focus on the interplay between light and shadow. We will also be moving between wide and narrow brushes to create different effects.

The shape and depth of an image can be achieved using only white acrylic paint on a previously prepared brightly coloured background. A limited palette removes pressure to mix varying shades of multiple colours. Instead, you must look at sheer light intensity and work with different levels of paint opacity.

I find working with pure white against a bright background energising, which gives a satisfying well-being bonus to this painting exercise.
