Why won’t Amazon refund me after wrong item sent?

Q I feel like Amazon has conned me. I ordered a laptop for £599, but instead received a pair of £23 speakers and a cable. I returned these immediately, saying the wrong item had been posted. However, Amazon is saying it won’t refund me because I didn’t return the laptop. But how could I return it if I never received it?
