Huge gardens hosted multiple generations at a time – children, parents and grandparents. Everyone played a role in the māra (garden) as well as tending to the dozens of pigs and chickens. Karakia (incantations) were just as much a part of gardening as was watering or weeding, imbuing the māra with vitality and gratitude toward the supernatural forces at play. By the time I was being told these stories, unfortunately, that is all they were – stories. Memories
