THE GOLD STANDARD
Having owned and loved this early Mk3 3-litre Ghia in the 1980s, Ste Brandreth let it get away. Now that he’s finally tracked it down and restored it, he won’t be letting the Capri escape again…

For most of us, there’s a car in our past that we wish we hadn’t sold. Occasionally there’s a whole list of cars; the ones that got away, which either had to be moved on for whatever reason, or simply slipped through our fingers somehow. An emotional connection is often the crux of it all, and when the car in question is rare and unusual in itself, the yearning can grow ever stronger. Take this Capri, for instance: registered in April 1978, it’s one of the earliest Mk3s, sporting the slatted front grille and sawtooth taillights but carrying over the Mk2 interior. And of course it would be four years before the3-litre Essex V6. A formidable package, and one which evidently struck a chord with its owner, Ste Brandreth: “I owned this car between 1988-1990,” he explains, “and only got rid of it because my commute at the time was through Warrington town centre, which was usually gridlocked so it cost me a fortune to run! And as I’d just started a family, buying SMA Gold Top milk and Pampers took precedence over 4-star petrol.”
