SCOTLAND
Oakwood Caravan & Camping Park, Highlands
This is a relatively new site on the camping scene, having just opened in 2018, and I’ve been very keen to book a stay for quite some time. The opportunity recently presented itself and I was not disappointed.
Oakwood lies on the outskirts of Aviemore at the end of a long treelined drive surrounded by an ancient oak wood - hence the name. It’s certainly well concealed, giving a wonderful sense of being miles away from everything, yet a 20-minute stroll brings you into the centre of Aviemore - an all-year-round resort that seems to have a constant buzz about it. Aviemore has a good range of cafés and restaurants, including a new retail park, and a wealth of shops to choose from.
The train station is just on the other side of town from where the heritage Strathspey Steam Railway also departs on a 10-mile journey to Broomhill on selected days throughout the year.
Because the site is so close to the Cairngorm Mountain ski resort, Oakwood is open all year, allowing visitors to take advantage of the ski season or simply opt to enjoy the mountains in winter.
There are endless hiking and cycling opportunities in the area, as well as water sport activities available at Loch Morlich or Loch Insh.
