UKHO to withdraw paper charts by 2026
Electronic charts and display systems, like chartplotters, will be approved for recreational use before paper charts are withdrawn in 2026, according to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). Currently, only Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) comply with International Maritime Organization regulations as an alternative to paper charts.
The announcement comes following the decision by the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) to withdraw paper versions of Admiralty standard nautical charts, thematic charts and Notices to Mariners by the end of 2026. Imray has said it will continue to produce paper charts.
MCA coded vessels, such as charter or sailing school boats, are legally required to carry paper charts as back up. Small commercial vessels are too small to carry
