Our motorhome
We started with a borrowed frame tent, as an experiment in affordable and enjoyable holidays with very little money to spare, and two young kids and a rather large and active dog to entertain.
Then a secondhand caravan fell into our possession and the future looked a lot rosier (well, drier anyway). We joined the Caravan Club, as it then was, 44 years ago and, for 32 of those years, we caravanned happily, owning two more secondhand ’vans and travelling a lot in France and the UK.
As the number of motorhomes we encountered grew, the possible advantages of a single unit over a vehicle-and-trailer combo struck me, but I still preferred to be able to unhitch the living accommodation and go sightseeing in the towcar.
A CHANCE ENCOUNTER
Eventually, we looked at a few motorhomes within the budget we had set (up to £20,000) and which met our list of would-likes and don’t-wants. Chief among the would-likes was a rear lounge, which more or less meant that the don’t-want list included a fixed bed (ie, a large area of the ’van used for only one purpose) and the garage inevitably associated with it (too much space that would probably tempt me into overloading).
