ESSENTIAL GUIDE
“Sewing interlocking patterns is great fun and so, this month, we show you how to make interesting blocks that weave and interlace.”

INTERLOCKING BLOCKS
’ve always found patchwork patterns with shapes that weave in and out to be fascinating, and I like to puzzle out how the knots and intersecting parts are formed. The distinguishing feature of these blocks is the main pattern twists and turns, feeding over and under other parts, and it’s often difficult to work out how the block is constructed. More often than not, partial seams are used to create this linked-chain effect and we will describe this technique in detail. The overall effect of these sort of blocks often creates a modern feel and they are perfect for quilts and other projects where a bold, graphic look is desired. Some variations and examples of interlocked and this article will describe how to make the first three blocks in the coming pages. In next month’s Essential Guide, we will look at how interlocking patterns can be created for pieced borders.
