CIRCLES OF CALM

BEHIND THE QUILT

DECADENT DRESDEN

“The main Dresden block in this quilt is most commonly made with curved Dresden leaves, combined with a sharper-pointed Dresden leaf and would traditionally be called a friendship plate. This kind of intricate block with these various different features would be more suited to being hand-pieced... a long and time-consuming labour of love.

“Instead, I have created templates for two new types of Dresden leaf – a more acutely angled leaf and a wider one. The central orange peel sections are raw-edge appliquéd and the circular zigzag borders in the nine larger blocks are foundation paper pieced. So, although this quilt does involve a certain amount of work, it is considerably quicker to make than by traditional hand-pieced methods.” – Lynne Goldsworthy
