If we don’t use it, we lose it

From our 30s onwards we begin to lose muscle, a process known as sarcopenia. If we’re not strength training, we can wave goodbye to up to 3-5% of muscle with each passing decade. And society doesn’t help us hold onto our strength, says personal trainer Grace Turner (fitnessgrace.co.uk). ‘People assume that women (and older women, in particular) are weak, and increasingly offer to carry things for us – from shopping bags to suitcases. They mean well, but without this day-to-day lifting we’re bound to get weaker and weaker.’
