WALK YOUR LABYRINTH

It was a first for me when I recently meandered through a ‘living’ labyrinth. With spekbooms on both sides of the winding path as I walked towards the centre. Human and nature breathing together, as it were.

Towards the end of last year I attended a retreat at Goedgedacht in the Riebeek Valley. Johann van Greunen, holistic wellness counsellor and reiki master, showed us how to appreciate our senses afresh. Walking the labyrinth of the farm was just one of many ‘exercises’.

From a sensory perspective, it was a wonderful experience. The smell of the veld, the chirping of birds, deep breaths of fresh air … Each of us walking alone. Barefoot. You need to feel the earth under your feet. It’s almost like an exchange of energy between you and the ground while the sun warms you. Lovely to feel the soil underfoot. Like you did as a child, when you visited family on the farm and skipped along the dirt road.

The history of the labyrinth spirals back to 5000 BC. Archaeologists
