Food cravings are an all-too-common winter hazard. They’re often linked with low mood caused by a drop in our body’s feelgood endorphins due to reduced sunlight and low temperatures.

At these times, we hunger for carb-rich foods, especially the quickly digested, high-GI kind such as cakes or biscuits.

This is because we’re looking for a speedy sugar hit to raise flagging energy levels and bring a surge of serotonin, the happiness hormone. But while these so-called comfort foods may bring satisfaction with a sense of pleasure at the taste and a spirit-lifting energy burst, this is unlikely to last long.
