Southwold Camping and Caravan Site, Suffolk
This site is close to the beach and harbour, 15 minutes from Southwold and is owned and operated by East Suffolk Council. It is a large site with many statics, but you are not really aware of the size when pitched in the touring section. The facilities are excellent, with hot showers, clean toilets and washing-up facilities.
As fish and seafood lovers, we had a wonderful time exploring the harbour and the shacks selling their catch of the day and seafood platters. We were spoilt for choice for places to eat and most of them sold fresh fish to take away. We enjoyed a drink at the Harbour Inn and watched a variety of sailing and fishing boats using the harbour.
The Southwold Lighthouse is situated in the centre of town, dwarfing the surrounding houses. It was deliberately built inland on top of a hill. It began work in 1890, replacing three local lighthouses under threat from severe coastal erosion, and the beam reaches 24 nautical miles.
We had a very enjoyable day visiting Aldeburgh, 35 miles to the south.
