FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE UPDATE: THE GENIE IS OUT OF THE BOTTLE

In the update on the recent foot and mouth (FMD) disease outbreaks from the Department of Agriculture, dated 8 April 2022, the National Director of Veterinary Services, Mpo Maja, announces that: “South Africa currently has 56 active FMD outbreaks in the previously FMD-free zone.”

“This heralds the loss of South Africa’s previous status of an FMD-free zone.”

These outbreaks have spread around the country to KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Gauteng, the North West, and Free State provinces (see table and map). This heralds the loss of South Africa's previous status of an FMD-free zone, which permitted the trade of agricultural products to the developed world.
