When the two-door Anglia and four-door Prefect 100E were launched in September 1953, the family resemblance to the bigger Consul was clear. However, the new shape looked right on the smaller cars because Ford had not simply tried to scale one down to make the other, but had started again from scratch.
The resulting leap forwards in styling terms over the upright cars that constituted Ford’s previous small car range was every bit as vast as the Consul and Zephyr had been over the Pilot. Once again there was monocoque construction for the new post-war Ford, massively over-engineered with welded-on box sections and bulkheads because the company was still feeling
