The first of our feature models is actually quite a difficult one to pin down to a single identity, which may be why people tend to refer to the whole family generically as the sit-up-and-beg cars. Quite what the name refers to, nobody seems to know for sure. The best guess seems to be the driving position you are forced to adopt – upright and with your hands out-stretched.
Like many manufacturers, Ford restarted car production after WW2 by reheating their pre-war designs. The difference with Ford was that they continued offering essentially the same thing all the way through to 1959, not because they had nothing new to offer (as we shall see, they had some superb new designs that came on stream from 1950)
