I think the wider societal issues around women going grey are that they are then perceived as being old, or even to have given up and stopped caring about how they look.
For so many of us, grey hair’s something we actively – and almost automatically – fight against, dyeing our hair so regularly we’re no longer familiar with our natural colour. But with mainstream hair dyes often containing a cocktail of questionable chemicals (and with the COVID-19 quarantine separating clients from hairdressers with ruthless abandon), it’s time to take a look at the growing global movement of #silversisters – women who choose to ditch the dye and make a radical return to their roots.
Before we dive in, full disclosure: I write this as a woman who has her roots meticulously covered by a beloved professional every four weeks, lest the tiniest hint of grey peek through. It’s a routine that’s been with me in some form since my twenties, when my first silver strands started to show and I hurriedly threw a box-dye at the situation – a kneejerk reaction
