■ AS BREXIT unfolded, we kicked off 2021 with news that small bird deliveries and collections to and from Europe and Ireland had ceased for live-stock courier company Walkers European Express Services. Mark Walker, owner of the Dudley-based company, said that with no clarification on importing and exporting captive birds following the EU exit, the birds’ welfare must come first.

■ KEN Grigg, the highly respected canary judge and breeder, announced his retirement from judging due to poor health, more than 50 years since his first judging assignment, aged about 23, at Eltham Bird Club. Mr Grigg plans to keep his Norwich stud going for as long as he can.

■ NORFOLK Foreign Bird Association (FBA) decided to run future Points Cup competitions online, following record membership involvement in 2020. The Points Cup was introduced in January 2020 to run at monthly meetings. Members were asked to bring along a bird to be judged by the guest speaker on the night and the top five exhibits would receive points. However, as Covid-19 restrictions
