JANUARY 2023
■ JANUARY 2023 kicked off with voting opening for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year. With 25 stunning nature photographs to choose from, our top bird photos included a crested guineafowl scratching another bird's head and ear, a flock of Caribbean flamingos looking after their young, and a striking portrait of a glaucous-winged gull.
■ THE Fife Canary Council crowned their Fancier of the Year (FOY) 2022 winners: Henry Cooper (Champion FOY) and David Cheshire (Novice FOY). Sadly, the competition was cut short owing to avian influenza restrictions. As the final two shows were held over the same weekend at opposite ends of the UK, it was an exciting end to the competition. Mr Cooper won with 125 points, while Mr Cheshire took home 195 points.
■ WE WERE pleased to report that a group of captive-bred Spix's macaws () were successfully released into the wild at the end of 2022. The 12 birds were held in a large release aviary near) to help the birds get used to their new surroundings.
