While we all have an idea what we can do to look after our general health, fluctuating hormones can leave us floundering. ‘If you’re going through perimenopause or menopause, or even just badly affected by PMS, this can really affect how you feel physically, emotionally and mentally,’ says consultant gynaecologist, Tania Adib (adib.org.uk). ‘Some women are absolutely fine with these changes, but many are very sensitive to the hormonal fluctuations that occur, and some react badly.’
Hormones start to decline many years before periods actually stop. ‘So, you may experience hormonal changes, but don’t necessarily associate this with the perimenopause,’ says Tania. ‘Taking hormones can be helpful in some cases for treating symptoms. But, there are also other options available, such as lifestyle changes and improving your diet. A good starting point is to consult a women’s health specialist, but there is a lot we can do to help ourselves.’ We asked Gabriella, Shona, Lottie and Amanda to share the lessons they have learnt…
