Skip the ‘Start’ screen in Microsoft Office

Ian Grady’s letter in Issue 617’s Problems Solved (page 68) about accessing pinned files reminded me of one of the things that irritated me when I upgraded from Office 2010 to 2019. In Office 2010, each program loaded straight to a new blank document, but in 2019 I had to go through the ‘Start’ screen.

To change this in 2019 I clicked the File tab in an open document, then selected Options. In the General section I scrolled down to the ‘Start up options’ section and unticked ‘Show the Start screen when this application starts’ (see screenshot).

You can also customise the Quick Access Toolbar to include recent and pinned files. Click ‘Quick Access Toolbar’ on the left-hand menu, then in the ‘Choose commands
