There you go,’ said Mum, applying a coat of varnish to Ursula’s fingernails.

‘Thanks Aunty Di, they look great,’ she smiled.

Ursula Barwick, two years older than me, was my cousin, but we’d grown up together more like sisters in the country town of Quirindi, NSW.

We had fun riding bikes and horses at our grandparents’ farm, where Ursula lived in a cottage with her mum, Cheree.

And we spent happy evenings having our nails painted by Mum.
