In the past decade, Volvo Penta has been working hard to reduce engine weight of recreationally-oriented diesels while still providing heaps of torque and maximum power. The 7.7L D8-600 inboard is one of these models.
Having a ‘Rating 5’ or the top of five models based on the same engine, the D8-600 should only be used in planing hulls. It develops maximum power at 3000rpm, which may seem high compared to competitors’ engines in its piston displacement range, but in fact, it’s not.
Take the Yanmar 6CX 530, for example. This 7.4L straight six develops maximum power of 523bhp at 2900rpm, so 3000rpm is not at all high in comparison. The Yanmar produces 1600
