It still amazes me how many people think a high power output is what separates an engine from its competition. In reality, plenty of torque developed from low down in the rev range plus a flat torque curve are what makes an engine a standout.
Volvo Penta’s D13-800 is one such engine. Its peak torque starts from a low 1290rpm and is completely flat through to 1800, perfect for getting a hefty planing hull out of the hole.
The D13-800 is the optional engine for the Maritimo M55 and S55 and from studying performance tests of these cruisers by Tim Van Duyl and James Dumergue respectively it would be my choice of engine. Both boats displace over 30 tonnes but powered by the D13-800 plane efficiently
