The concept of the forward-facing IPS or Integrated Propulsion System has been well known since the early 2000s. In fact, the concept goes at least as far back as 1948 when Charles D. Strang, inventor of the stern drive, patented a stern drive design with a forward facing propeller.
Steerable Azipods with forward facing props have long been used on cruise ships because not only do they provide more manoeuvrability than conventional shaft drives and separate rudders but in the age of modular construction, the main diesels drive alternators that, in turn, power the Azipods without having to align prop shafts between the modules. A good example on Azipod placing is on the YouTube video of the AIDAprima cruise ship built by Mitsubishi
