HEART OF GOLD

Laying back on the bed, the sonographer squirted cold gel onto my tummy.

It was my 20-week scan and, although my husband James, 44, and I didn’t want to know the sex, we knew it would be amazing to see our little baby and how it had grown.

As the grainy black and white image flashed up on the screen, our hearts filled with utter joy.

Only, seconds after our loving moment, the sonographer’s face suddenly fell.

‘There’s something wrong with the baby’s heart,’ she said.

‘We’ll need to do a more in-depth scan.’

She explained at this stage, she didn’t know how bad things were and to come back in a few days.

James and I went home in numb shock.
