After a season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, Gareth Bale has returned to Real Madrid for his swan song at the club. Just a year remains on his contract and there’s no doubt that he’ll be leaving Los Blancos at the end of 2021-22, but there’s still hope he can bow out to the fans chanting – rather than whistling – his name.

Last summer, his relationship with Zinedine Zidane and the club’s supporters had fallen to an all-time low. He had, quite justly, enraged them by using his facemask to cover his eyes and pretend to be taking a siesta during their game with Alaves, before further infuriating them called his antics “shameful”, with fans on social media demanding he quit the club.
